Explaining death to children can be a difficult task for pediatric nurses, parents, clergy and anyone else with this difficult task. The Barklay and Eve Children's Book Series is the creation of Karen Carney, a Registered Nurse and a Nationally Recognized Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has mentored families in crisis for over twenty years. Karen Carney has been explaining death, loss, cremation, cancer, hospice, and organ and tissue donation to children and families for years.
She has brought her years of experience to life through the eyes of the two main characters, Barklay and Eve, her lovable Portuguese Water Dogs. The purpose of the series is to offer information, education and support during life's inevitable challenges. Through the book series she takes the task of explaining funerals, cremation, cancer, and hospice head on and uses coloring books to keep children interested.
There are currently eight interactive coloring books in the series and every one offers the reassuring and hopeful message that we can get through anything, even explaining death to children, with the love and support of family and friends! Each coloring book has a page in the beginning dedicated to the caregiver that describes the rationale behind the content. Stuffed puppies, replicas of the main characters ' Barklay and Eve ' help to soften the message and provide a cuddly companion for the child to hold.
Karen Carney, RN, LCSW author and illustrator, teamed up with her colleague, Janet Klett, RN to publish these invaluable grief resources. The books serve as the script for parents, caregivers, clergy, and nurses providing accurate information and a safe, tender approach to tough issues.
